What top salespeople do differently

Charisma, confidence, the gift of the gab — the image of the great salesperson has one flaw: the data doesn’t back it. What sets the best apart can be learned. And it’s usually the opposite of what you’d expect.

When you picture a great salesperson, you probably see someone talking. Confident, fluent, persuasive. Research into sales calls paints a different picture — and that’s good news, because what sets the best apart isn’t personality. It’s skill.

The best talk less

Gong analyzed hundreds of thousands of recorded sales calls and found a clear divide: top salespeople talk on average 43% of the time, the customer the other 57. The average rep talks over 65% and doesn’t even notice. The difference isn’t that the best are shy. They use silence as a tool — they let the customer finish and learn what everyone else talks over.

They ask before they offer

A weak salesperson fires off product benefits the moment they can. A strong one first finds out what’s really pressing the customer. Neil Rackham’s classic research (SPIN Selling), across thousands of calls, showed that successful salespeople ask more questions about the problem and its consequences — and only then fit a solution to a need that’s been understood. Selling isn’t persuasion. It’s diagnosis.

They don’t treat signing as the finish line

The average salesperson thinks in individual deals. The best think in relationships that come back. They know a customer they don’t abandon after signing is the basis for the next three deals — and that remembering “when to reach out” is as much a skill as knowing how to close. It’s just that nobody teaches it, because it doesn’t demo well on a stage.

What to take from it

The good news: none of this is talent. Talk less, ask better, don’t vanish after signing — those are habits, not genes. And habits can lean on a system that reminds you of them when you forget in the heat of the moment.

Lemnio handles that last part — when and why to reach out, so the relationship doesn’t go cold. Start free, or book a walkthrough at [email protected].
