The deal doesn't end at signature: caring for the customer after the sale

For the customer, signing isn't the finish line — it's the start. Why silence follows the signature, what the second deal costs — and a rhythm of care you can schedule on the day you sign.

In sales folklore, signing the contract is the finish line: the bell rings, the deal moves to "won," and attention jumps to the next lead. But from the customer's point of view it's no finish line at all. They've just signed — and now it shows whether you're a partner or merely a vendor.

The cheapest deal is the second one

Winning a new customer means paying for marketing, getting through a tender and building trust from zero. A second deal with an existing customer needs none of that — the trust already exists. Only one thing is required: to be there when the next need arises. Which in practice means remembering before the competition does.

Why silence follows the signature

It isn't ill will. It's the architecture of the tools: a pipeline CRM moves a won deal to the archive, and with it the customer disappears from the salesperson's daily view. The system has no reason to show them anymore — they're in no stage. Forgetting isn't a human failing; it's built into the tool.

A rhythm of care: what to actually do

Care after signing isn't a newsletter. It's a few specific, pre-scheduled touches: a check-in call a few weeks after delivery (is everything working?), a mid-term check-in (what's changed on your side?), and a timely call before the contract ends or the next season starts. Each has a date and a reason — and each can be scheduled on the day you sign.

The key condition: the system has to keep showing customers after signing. That's a good question to ask of any CRM, by the way — what does it do with a won deal? If the answer is “it moves to the archive,” you'll be fighting the tool, not your memory. In Lemnio, signing archives nothing — the relationship timeline runs on and reminders live on it as before. But whatever you use, this is the property that matters.

A small test for your company

Take ten customers who bought from you a year ago. For how many of them do you know when you last spoke — and when you'll speak next? If the answer is "I don't know," it isn't a reproach. It's just a sign that the company's memory lives in people's heads, not in a system.

If the test above came out as “I don't know,” you don't have to switch systems today — just set three reminders for your three most important customers. And if you'd rather have a tool watch them, Lemnio is free — and at [email protected] it's us who answer, not a chatbot.
