Listening as a sales skill

Listening sounds like a soft trait. In fact it’s the hardest sales tool you have — and it can be done right or wrong.

“Good listener” sounds like a line from a job interview nobody takes seriously. Yet in sales it decides more money than most closing techniques. Because listening isn’t staying quiet while the other person talks. It’s active work.

The difference between silence and listening

You can be quiet and not be listening — just assembling in your head what you’ll say once the customer runs out of breath. Real listening is the opposite: you concentrate hard enough to repeat what you heard in your own words. Chris Voss calls it labeling — you name out loud what you hear underneath (“sounds like the thing that stings most is this”). The customer either nods or corrects you. Both are wins.

Why it sells

People don’t buy from whoever has the best arguments. They buy from someone they feel understands them. You don’t create that feeling by saying “I understand”. You create it by restating their problem more precisely than they could themselves. In that moment you stop being a salesperson and become someone who gets it.

The most common mistake

The biggest enemy of listening is your own solution. The moment “we can fix this” pings in your head, you stop listening and start waiting for a gap to shove it into. The customer can tell. Good salespeople hold that solution in their pocket a few minutes longer than they’d like — and ask one more question.

What to take away

On your next meeting, give yourself a single goal: to leave able to describe the customer’s problem better than they can. Not to leave having said everything about the product. That change of order is the whole difference.

For listening to have a memory, it has to be stored somewhere — Lemnio keeps the whole customer story on one timeline. Start free, or write to [email protected].
