Attention doesn't switch: the real cost of “just checking email”

Sophie Leroy described attention residue: part of your head stays with the previous task. Why a sales day is an interruption machine — and how to step out of it.

“I'll just check my email” sounds innocent. But attention isn't a switch — it's more like honey: when you move it, some of it stays stuck to the previous thing. Organisational psychologist Sophie Leroy named this attention residue in 2009 and showed that after switching tasks, we perform worse on the next one — the head is still processing the last.

Twenty-plus minutes to get back

Researcher Gloria Mark (UC Irvine) spent years measuring real office work and arrived at a number worth remembering: after an interruption, it takes over twenty minutes on average to fully return to the original task. Interruptions also breed more — broken attention goes looking for its next distraction. Ten “quick checks” a day isn't ten minutes; it can easily be half a working day at lower quality.

The sales day as an interruption machine

Few professions have it worse: calls, enquiries, urgencies, a colleague “just for a second.” Some interruptions belong to the job — a fast response to an enquiry wins deals. The problem is the rest: switching out of fear of forgetting something. You check email because you don't know what's lurking. That isn't communication. That's sentry duty.

Sentry duty belongs to a system

Attention residue doesn't vanish through willpower — it vanishes when the head trusts that nothing will escape. Two practical measures: batches instead of patrols (email and messages at fixed times) and one queue that holds the dates and promises for you, so between batches you can be fully with the customer. The best salespeople aren't more available. They're more present.

What to take away

Count today's switches. Not for guilt — for one question: how many were sentry duty? That's exactly how much attention you can give back to conversations.

Lemnio is built to stand sentry so you don't have to: the reminder speaks up, the rest of the time it's silent. Start free.
